Chatham High Special Education Teacher Simonfay Named '2024 Hero'
by Congresswoman Sherrill
CHATHAM, NJ – Sally Simonfay has been named a 2024 Hero by Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill.
The Chatham High Special Education teacher was recognized for her outstanding work in supporting the homeless population and others in need in New Jersey.
“We are incredibly proud of Mrs. Simonfay for being recognized for her outstanding community service,” Doug Walker, CHS Principal, said. “Her tireless dedication to providing for families in need has made a profound difference in the lives of many. Mrs. Simonfay exemplifies the spirit of compassion and service that inspires our staff, students, and the broader community.”
The nomination reads, Sally is a high school teacher, wife, and mother of teenagers. Every Monday and Friday, she and a friend pack up their cars with food and feed 150-200 people experiencing homelessness. She also takes care of families that live in some welfare motels, making sure they have everything to survive. At Christmas time, she asks the community to help her bring some joy to underprivileged students from a nearby school. She collects around 500 wrapped, tagged gifts for the students. Sally is Chatham’s hero; she deserves to be recognized.
“Being recognized by Mikie Sherrill as a hero is awesome,” Simonfay said. “However, there is no way I’d ever be able to help so many people each week without the support of my volunteers and community.
“Chatham is so outrageously generous that it has this ‘let us help’ attitude. Friends, neighbors, schools and religious and civic organizations are the true heroes for being so supportive of my efforts to help the homeless.”
